« La philologie, si l’on y prend garde, a devant elle un grand avenir, cet avenir passe par la diffusion libre la plus large possible du domaine public : les nouveaux outils fondés sur des textes numérisés offrent des possibilités de diffusion et d’analyse dont on n’a jamais disposé ; il faut travailler à mettre en libre accès le plus grand nombre possible de textes, de la meilleure qualité possible, et développer de nouveaux outils d’analyse, qui dépassent la simple requête d’un terme ou d’une expression. »
Alain Guerreau, L’avenir de la philologie. Textes anciens et domaine public.

The framework within which Renan Source operates is an eminently public one: the bearers of the project are research laboratories (CNRS / ENS) funded by the State and other public institutions (The French National Library, the City of Paris, the Collège de France). It stands to reason, then, that the mode of publishing we have chosen (a choice cultural, political, and also in a certain sense moral) is that of Open Access.

In accordance with the agreements signed with our partner institutions the entirety of Renan Source’s content is published under Creative Commons licence version 4.0 (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0): “attribution, non-commercial, no-derivatives”.

This means that the reader can consult, download and freely share the entirety of the materials made available. They can, if they wish, transfer and save any or all of these materials on their hard drive; they can cite them in their work; they can make anthologies thereof and distribute them, in teaching contexts, to students, be it in paper or in digital form.

It is imperative, however, so as to comply with the existing agreements and conventions bearing on online publications, that the source should always be cited, with exact mention being made of the relevant URL, whenever said materials are shared or re-used.

The materials made available on Renan Source are not to be utilized to ends that are in any shape or form commercial. Consequently, it is forbidden to sell, distribute, or publish either the whole or any part of these materials with a view to deriving therefrom some pecuniary benefit or advantage.
